Wells descending over 700 feet tap into an aquifer of pure water to sustain the vines during the dry summer months; three natural reservoirs accumulate run-off during the winter months. Water is essential to the vineyard and is provided judiciously for quality and respectfully to protect the resource.
The 70-acre vineyard is planted in a mosaic of 70 single-acre sub-blocks, and rootstock is custom-selected to match the soils of each sub-block. Quality is assured every year, regardless of the weather, by limiting vine yield to maintain balance.
Kenzo Estate wines are crafted exclusively from grapes grown on the estate’s 70-planted acres. The purity of the air, unique microclimate, soil profile and gentle slope of Mt. George, located on
the southern end of the Vaca Mountain Range, all contribute to the grapes’ flavor profile.
The soil gives the wine its character. Predominantly from the Hambright series (well drained soils on uplands, formed from volcanic rock) the soils on Kenzo Estate are from alluvial and eluvial sediments, meaning they were produced locally by water and wind erosion. Roots of the vines penetrate deeply and capture the essential nutrients to drive their growth and to develop extraordinary fruit character.
